As you know Isla has always loved a good book… she will sit and quietly ‘read’ to herself for entire long car journeys and I often hear her chuckling away or kissing her favourite characters! We don’t tend to venture away from BabyLit classics much as she’s so obsessed, but I thought Christmas was the perfect time to inject some new reading material into her collection!
We roped Nanny in to help us try out the new books! First up is ‘That’s not my penguin…’ from Usbourne. It’s a touchy-feely book by Fiona Watt & Rachel Wells. Currently £5.49 from Waterstones.
The ‘That’s not my…’ range are hugely popular and we can see why! Every page has a different penguin with a new texture to explore – until the last page when you find your penguin and his lovely fluffy baby! (*Spoiler alert!*) It’s a lovely size for Isla to hold and is great quality too.
‘Dear Santa’ by Rod Campbell is a ‘lift up the flap’ book with a long list of present requests for Santa! Isla loves gently peering behind each flap to find a different present – although I’m hoping this doesn’t give her too many ideas!
Even Baxter wanted to get in on the action – he gave it 5 paws! It is £5.99 from Waterstones.
As you can see the quality of the pages is brilliant and they are very easy for Isla to turn herself. The simple design was perfect – it kept her attention and helped her focus on one new thing at a time!
‘The Christmas Bear’ is another ‘Lift-the-flap’ book by Ian Whybrow & Axel Scheffler – the illustrator of The Gruffalo no less!
This was a really lovely story of a little bear that gets left behind and has to chase Santa to catch up… You lift the flaps to find all the ways he chased Santa across the world! The illustrations are quite busy but I think a slightly older toddler would enjoy pointing out all the different, funny things they can see on each page! It is also the biggest of all the books – so harder for Isla to hold and enjoy by herself.
I left the books out on the table for Isla to enjoy whenever she wanted. She found her favourite parts in each book and kept going back to those each time!
Isla is head to toe Zara (what a surprise!) and this might be my favourite festive outfit to date!

Have you ever seen a cheekier face?
Back to reading… and theres so many great new parts she’s just discovered to show Nanny!
If you are struggling with what to get your little one for Christmas I’d say as many new/second hand books as you can get your hands on. And the best gift… sit down and read them all with them. Take the time to focus all your attention on just them and lose yourselves in a story for a few minutes. Those are the memories that you will cherish forever when they are grown and I’m sure you won’t remember if your house was perfectly tidy or if the dinner was a little bit burnt! 🙂
What will you be reading with your little one this Christmas? We have so many more books on our list and will be sharing them with you over on our Instagram & Instagram Stories! Make sure you follow us for more!
